Supracondylar Fracture in children

CASE 1

3 years old from Bahadurgadh child fell from stairs and injured his right elbow. There was pain, swelling and was not able to move his elbow. They went to a quack who applied a tight bandage. It caused further swelling and blisters over the injured area. X-Ray showed a badly comminuted supracondylar fracture of humerus.

Because of immense swelling, reduction of the fracture by closed method failed. Hence, Dr. Ashwani Maichand and his team discussed with parents about mini open surgery. After their consent, fracture was opened, reduced and fixed with two pins (under C-Arm guidance).

X-Ray after surgery was good, the fingers were moving nicely and pulsation was good. Patient was discharged next morning in satisfactory condition.

CASE 2

6 years old girl from Moti Nagar had a fall while playing at home. She fractured her left humerus (supracondylar fracture). Its one of the commonest fractures in children. Luckily the patient came to us within hours after the fall. The advantage of early treatment is that the swelling is very less and hence fracture was reduced by closed method (without incision) under C-Arm guidance. The fracture position was confirmed by post-operative X-Ray. The child discharged next morning with good finger movements and pulsation.
